The Mangrove Photography Awards, organized by the Mangrove Action Project (MAP), helps to "raise awareness of the people and wildlife that rely on mangrove forests, the threats they face, and why urgent action is needed to protect them". This wildlife category winner captures a rare and unique fishing behaviour used only by bottlenose dolphins living in the shallows of the mangrove-lined bays of Florida Bay and a few other locations in the Caribbean. Mud-ring feeding involves a dolphin from the pod encircling a school of fish, kicking up sediments with its tail. The fish become 'trapped' in this circle of mud, causing them to jump out to 'safety' into the jaws of the dolphins. Indian mangrove forests have been cleared for fishing ponds in this image. Without considerable efforts to restore, manage and conserve these ecosystems, mangrove forest cover will continue to decline. The Mangroves Working Group, led by Friends of Ocean Action in collaboration with 1t.org, aims to raise ambition and deliver action towards the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests, by enabling companies and investors to enhance the blue carbon market with support from non-profit leaders and experts....
Digital photography is well into its third decade, yet film keeps hanging on, lying there shouting, 'It's just a flesh wound!' I'd argue that film photography will never die. In the postapocalyptic future, long after the grid has collapsed and all our digital images are gone, someone will pop up with a Nikon FM2T and carry on documenting the world with expired Tri-X. If you want to shoot film, fear not, it's easier than ever to shoot, develop, and print film. We've put together this guide to help you learn, or re-learn, the joys of film photography, whether you're a newcomer or an expert, but haven't shot film in a few years. If you want to get started with analog photography, you'll need a film camera. This could be an entire guide on its own, but in the interests of simplicity, I'll suggest a couple of capable, reasonably priced 35-mm film cameras. Naturally, there are hundreds of other film cameras out there to choose from, ranging from brand-new offerings by manufacturers like Lomography, to venerable Leicas that still sell for many thousands of dollars without a lens (which will set you back several more thousands of dollars). If you're new to buying used camera gear on eBay, have a look at our guide to buying used on eBay to stay safe and get the best bang for your buck....
Shopping for someone whose love of taking pictures is bumping up against the creative constraints of their iPhone's camera roll' There's a whole world of photography gifts and gear out there, but you don't need to spring for an expensive new camera body to get a gift that counts. If you'd like to stay well, well below the $1,000 threshold you'd spend on a new mirrorless digital camera, these fun options prioritize play and can expand anyone's photography horizons. As far as hobbies go, photography is extremely personal ' everyone has their own style, preferences and gear setup. Personally, I started shooting around two decades ago with an old 35mm camera passed down from my grandfather (a now-ancient Canon AE-1 ' these used to be everywhere!) and still prefer the simplicitly of relatively rustic equipment. As a hobbyist who mostly shoots adventure and nightsky photos (outside of work-related photojournalism) and occasionally sells my prints, I've tested all kinds of camera equipment, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, action cameras and many, many lenses. These days I mostly shoot digital, but film and physical prints are making a comeback, a trend our gift guide makes ample note of....
Last week, we featured the winners of this year's annual Audubon Photography Awards, and today, competition organizers were kind enough to share some of their Top 100 images from the thousands of entries. Photographers were competing for eight prizes across five divisions, and their images depicted birdlife from all 50 U.S. states as well as eight Canadian provinces and territories. Red-naped Sapsucker. Cohen: "When I found an active red-naped sapsucker nest, I saw firsthand the work parents did to feed and care for their brood. With my gear on a tripod, I positioned myself to watch their comings and goings. The chicks inside were too young to poke out of the hole, but both parents regularly brought larva and insects to the nest. They'd also carry off fecal sacs'little packages of poop'like the one covered in wood chips pictured here." Photographed in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. # Elegant Tern. Lohman: "I visited the same location for several days in a row to photograph a large flock of Elegant Terns, a seasonal visitor to the area. One day I observed many of them on a sandbar in a pond, occasionally taking off as a group, flying around, and returning until something triggered them to take off again. After seeing this happen a few times, I set up my tripod at an angle where I would have a nice reflection of the birds as they took off." Photographed at Moss Landing Wildlife Area, in Moss Landing, California. #...
