Many of the first startups in Silicon Valley were started from informal, ad hoc relationships between researchers at Stanford and alumni in Business or Venture Capital. Early stage incubators did not exist; they were perhaps a sparkle in the eye of some the young titans of contemporary high-tech. Even on campus it was clear that most research and startup collaboration happened within each school; the connection between disciplines was mostly missing.
During the late nineties we, the Unicircles founding team, were enrolled at Stanford, Oxford, and other Universities around the globe. At the time we witnessed first-hand the lack of inter-disciplinary partnering on new research and innovation topics. We independently started targeted research and entrepreneurship programs between engineering, business, and medical sciences schools to bring prospective entrepeneurs together. For example "Stanford Interact", a program launched together with BASES, the Business Association for Stanford Engineering Students. The Interact dinner series connected prospective founders from across campus, inspiring late night discussions about technology "disintermediation", from which numerous successful ventures were started.
We believe that even today, 25 years later, global collaboration between universities and industry can be improved. This is especially the case outside of Silicon Valley, where the more informal networks with established entrepreneurs and early stage angel investors - with a “Unicorn” track-record - are less developed. In Europe we see a wealth of untapped expertise, despite many attempts by the EU to incubate more competition vis-a-vis the Valley.
Unicircles was founded in 2012 in Zurich and San Francisco, with the ambition to become a “digital silk road” between Asia, Europe and the Americas. During the last decade we built the platform on a foundation of proprietary AI, Data Management, and networking capabilities. Our founding team includes long time entrepreneurs from the San Francisco Bay Area - one of us working closely with the first angel investor in SUN Microsystems, also credited with coining the name Silicon Valley (Ralph Vaerst, look it up 😀). Building on our entrepreneurial experience spanning 5 decades and 3 continents, we are truly honored to help accelerate global research collaboration.
